We met him in New York City to hear him reflect on the random attack that almost took his life and the emotions he confronted in its aftermath. We chose to shoot in black and white to convey the severity of the circumstances Gavagan faced and give the viewer a glimpse into his ordeal and his surprising act of forgiveness.
